State health rankings put CA at No. 24

December 9th, 2008, 7:00 am · 10 Comments · posted by Courtney Perkes

If the rest of the country sees Californians (from the governor on down) as a bunch of wacky health nuts who ban smoking in bars and on beaches, new data suggests otherwise. While residents of our fair state have the nation’s second lowest smoking rate after Utah, and we’re far less likely to be obese than residents in many other states, we fall short in two big areas:

We breathe polluted air and 18.5 percent of us lack health insurance. That’s enough to put California at No. 24, smack in the average range, with Vermont ranking the healthiest state and Louisiana coming in dead last.

The data was compiled from 22 health measures by the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association, and Partnership for Prevention. Check out an interactive map of state health.

Take our poll on how you think California ranks for health:

Which state do you think is the healthiest?

Could it be all the millions of illegals who don’t have health insurance in California who cram in all the emergency rooms that’s the problem and the cause for the low ranking?

Just think if all the illegals were actually deported as the law states, how much more “healthier” California would be.

hahaha according to shape or health magazine ( i cant remember which one) - santa ana is the healthiest city - haha yea right.

  • ThisIsNotAnExit says:

Santa Ana would be the healthiest city because everyone is shot dead before they have a chance to grow up and be fat or get cancer.

  • Sam says:

Speaking of Santa Ana, did anyone else notice the IMMIGRATION news section has been removed?

  • Nina says:

CA is probably not the healthiest state, but it sure has the best media coverage and celebrities promoting the idea it is. We don’t need to boost our already exploding population!!! Please!!!

How I long for the day when everyone who complains about illegal immigrants would do so in flawless English!

California? Healthy? Clearly people that think this are part of the problem. Hello??!! California’s version of excersise is a trip to the plastic surgery clinic for a nip, tuck, or fat suck. I say we are in the top 10 but defenitly not number 1.

Sorry OC surfer, but illegals aren’t the only problem. I see my share of big fat non illegal butts (Male and Female) wallowing around the local shopping areas and beaches only “thinking” they are healthy.

Heck our Governator had a bypass which probably had something to do with his cigar smoking habit. He has also admited to doing steroids years back when involved in bodybuilding. Not exactly a good example of health.
