The FDA is warning consumers about 25 weight loss products that contain ingredients that might pose health risks.
The pills contain various undeclared ingredients, including sibutramine, a controlled substance; rimonabant, a drug that’s not approved for marketing in the U.S.; phenytoin, an anti-seizure medication; and phenolphthalein, a solution used for chemical experiments and suspected cancer-causing agent.
Some of the amounts found in the pills exceed FDA-recommended levels. They’re sold online and in retails stores. Other pills that have been labeled as all natural actually contain “potentially harmful ingredients” that are not reflected on the product label.
If you’re taking one of these pills, the FDA says you should stop immediately and talk to your doctor about potential risks.
According to the FDA release, here are some of the health risks:
Sibutramine, which was found in many of the products, can cause high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia, palpitations, heart attack or stroke. This drug can also interact with other medications that patients may be taking and increase their risk of adverse drug events. The safety of sibutramine has also not been established in pregnant and lactating women, or in children younger than 16 years of age.
Rimonabant, another ingredient found in these products, was evaluated, but not approved by the FDA for marketing in the United States. The drug, which is approved in Europe, has been associated with increased risk of depression and suicidal thoughts and has been linked to five deaths and 720 adverse reactions in Europe over the last two years.

If the FDA puts a banned on the product buy as much as you can. That means it works and the pharmaceutical companies put a bug in their ear so they can ban the product and the pharmaceutical companies can do “research” and sale it under prescription for much more money.
rc very interesting….im a little chunkee wich one would you suggest
Wow RC! How wrong you are. Remember Phen Phen? That was a pharmaceutical drug for weightloss. The FDA Recalled and Banned it because it caused your heart to harden.
Venom Hyperdrive 3.0?
Someone would put something called “Venom” in their body?
Are you sure this isn’t a disk drive?
RC, that’s a very poor and dangerous recommendation, as well as being dead wrong. If the substance is banned, it cannot be sold, even under prescription. And if it’s already present, a pharmaceutical company can’t get a patent on it.
For your amusment, and selective memories, lest we forget the nutrisweet poison??? Passed by the FDA faster than any other “man made” chemical before or since. Boasted as the replacement sweetner for theages and nothing could be safer…. Then it was found quite to the distress of many unfortunate test humans that it caused BRAIN DAMAGE. The only reason this product was passed could be found in the pockets of the patent holder as previously stated…
RC, even if what you are saying is true–maybe on a planet where everybody thinks anything the gov’t does is a conspiracy–I think people would stay away from these pills regardless and stay on the safe side. Hmm, lose 10 pounds and risk dying by taking pills or just eat less and exercise a bit more? I’ll take the latter.
Phen-Fen was banned for use together. Phen=phentermine and fen=fenflauramine are two seperate pills. And, you are wrong, Phentermine is still prescribed by physicians as a weight loss aid.
Fen Phen was actually relatively safe and very effective but was destroyed by greedy attorneys much like the Dalcon Shield, which was a a safe form of birth control for millions of woman - much safer than the pill, which is attributed to cancer in woman over 35.
Do a google search on Fen Phen and find out how much real research you find. Of course, you will have to scroll through dozens of advertising for class action law firms begging for your business so they can send you for faulty echocardiogram readings by law firm-appointed doctors. I personally know 2 people who got money on the Fen Phen class action racket and neither of them have any cardiac problems associated in any way this drug. One had his heart valve replaced due to a congenital problem just like his father and his brother.
Fen Phen was recalled voluntarily due to a finding of a suspected 30 % causation in a control group of only 100 patients with no other real proof. After that, the lawyers took over. The cause was thought to be an excess of serotonin in the system. Funny this does not stop the peddling of drugs such as Paxil or Prozac, which have terrible side effects and are virtually useless in treating so called depression.
The truth is that Fen Phen worked and that lawyers wanted some of the profits. They use certain public medicine front groups along with the fear of class action litigation to steal others’ equity. On balance, the benefits of Fen Phen used for a shorter period of time (less than 12 weeks) greatly outweighed any possible health risks to the obese and largely unhealthy people that lost weight using this drug compound.
I have been taking this drug since August. And I have lost 40 pounds
No, let RC take the pills and thus clean himself/herself out of the gene pool.
I’m with RC….a family member of mine just went through a serious health ordeal. It is clear to me now that western medicine and the FDA make money on keeping you ill and primed to become ill. Question authority people…just don’t lay down and take it.
Once it is banned, dieters can go back to the most trusted weight loss drug, methamphetamine.
